4th ANNUAL
NFPA GOLF TOURNAMENT
Held Sunday, 12 September 2004, in Plymouth, MA
on behalf of The Brendan Grant Foundation
Plymouth, MA: Once again the Southers Marsh Golf Course
in Plymouth, Massachusetts hosted the 4th Annual NFPA Golf Tournament on Sunday,
12 September. The event took place under spectacular September
skies, and was a marvelous success on all accounts.
Located on the beautiful south shore of metropolitan Boston
not far from Cape Cod Bay, these links are strategically located among
local cranberry bogs in a lush landscape of green and purple. The weather was great all day,
starting with a beautiful mist that soon burned off with the bright
morning sunshine. The early morning mist transformed into a fine
September day that was almost perfectly comfortable with no humidity and
just the right temperature.
The 18 holes of golf
began at 8:00 am sharp in a best-ball scramble format, and special thanks are due to
Dave Tourigny Sr. for all his effort organizing this event. This year's event was a
repeat of last year's event, with a focus of having an enjoyable day of
golf for those who love this outdoor sport and who also want to help the
Foundation's worthy causes. The Southers Marsh is a magnificently designed course, with cranberry bogs artfully woven through the various
links (click here for a link to
the golf club's website).
Ten foursomes competed for cash prizes. The winning foursome was the
team of Brian Bishop, Bill Gibson, Bruce
Mullin and Scott Hansen, which produced the best score of the day with a
dazzling combined score of 3 under
par. The Shirley party, comprised of Frank Shirley, Jared Shirley,
Ron Perry and Bob Reese placed second with a combined score even with par.
Interestingly, there was a three way tie for second place, involving the
afore-mentioned Shirley team, and the Tourigny team (Dave Tourigny Sr. and
Jr., Bob Winnett and Scott Younie) and Bielen team (Rich Bielen, Rob
Machado, Bill Burke and Dave Hague). The tie breaker to determine
second place defaulted to the score for the hardest hole, which was the
fourth hole. The Shirley team birdied this hole, while the Tourigny
team had a par and the Bielen team spotted at one over. These
translates overall to the Tourigny team placing third and the Bielen team
coming in fourth.
Additional contests included the closest to the pin on the
7th hole and 12th holes, won by Terri Tarr for the Women and Ron Perry for
the men. The course certainly has its share
of challenges, with plenty of golf balls finding their way into the
cranberry bogs. After completing the course, everyone was able to
relax and enjoy a barbeque lunch before departing to enjoy the rest of the
day. In addition, all participants received a new golf shirt as a
way of saying thanks for their support.
Again, many thanks go to all who participated, and especially to Dave Tourigny Sr. for
all his work putting this event together. Click here for the full
story of last year's 2003
Golf Tournament, also at Southers Marsh). It was a fun day of golf for all
involved, and the proceeds from this successful event have been donated to
benefit the various on-going initiatives of The Brendan Grant Foundation.
