2004 BRENDAN GRANT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO CHRIS BARBER
BELMONT - The third annual Brendan Grant Scholarships were awarded at the
Senior Student
Assembly at Belmont High School in Belmont, MA on Friday, 28 May 2004.
This year's scholarship recipient representing the Belmont High School
Varsity Baseball team is team Captain Chris Barber. Sincere
congratulations are extended to Chris and his family.
Chris is a graduating Belmont High School Senior who will be attending St.
Anselm's College in the fall of 2004. Chris will be playing baseball
for the St. Anselm's baseball team, which in recent years has had one of
the top teams in the competitive Northeast-10 League. This is the
same league that Brendan Grant played in while a member of the American
International College team in the spring of 2001.
The 2004 Belmont High School baseball team has had a very successful
season, and Chris has been a pivotal contributor to this success. As
one of the team Captains, he has helped lead the team to the
playoff's. Chris is an all-around contributor, as a starting
pitcher, dependable batter, and strong defensive fielder. As one of
3 primary starters in 2004, he posted a record of 3-2 with 34 strike outs
in 37 innings of work, with a noteworthy ERA of 0.292. At the plate
his average has floated around 0.330, and he has 6 steals in 6
attempts. Perhaps most noteworthy is his fielding percentage at
shortstop, where he has made only 2 errors all season out of 51 attempts,
and posts a fielding percentage of 0.960 to earn the reputation as one of
the best defensive infielders in the league.
The Brendan Grant Scholarship has been established in
memory of Brendan Grant, the accomplished 19-year old Belmont baseball player who was
fatally injured in an outfield collision during a Senior Babe Ruth game in June
200l. The two annual scholarships provides assistance to a senior member of
both the Belmont High School
varsity baseball team and the Belmont High School varsity softball team who will be attending an institution of higher learning after
graduation. The scholarship is intended to reward a player who possesses the same positive
spirit and leadership skills for which Brendan was known. Click

All contributions are greatly appreciated, and can be mailed to "The
