Sunday, 7 March 2004:  A great day of skiing or snowboarding was had by all who attended the Second Annual Brendan Grant Foundation Ski/Snowboard Race held at ski_race04_pic1.jpg (68045 bytes) Tenney Mountain in scenic Plymouth, NH.  The weather was magnificent, with bright sunshine and  warm spring temperatures.  It was all smiles on the Giant Slalom race course, and at the raffle  and award ceremony that followed.  Skiers and snowboarders competed against each other and against themselves in an attempt to improve on their personal best time.

Some impressively speedy times were recorded.  The fastest times of the day were recorded in the male skiers division by some of the better known and more faithful of the ski area locals.  Although the fastest single-run  time was posted by Dan Egan at 18.71 seconds, the overall fastest combined recorded time was by Carl Anderson at 38.22 seconds, which just beat Dan Egan's combined time of 38.43 seconds.  Combined times were used (for the two runs taken by all participants) because the course was shifted ski_race04_pic6.jpg (53483 bytes) mid-day between the two runs to take advantage of better snow pack.

Awards were provided for the fastest male and female skiers in six age brackets, and for the fastest male and female snowboarders.  Awards were also presented to the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son pairs.  This was truly a family event in the spirit of the Foundation activities.

The winners in the each category with the fastest combined speeds, starting first with the snowboarders, were as follows:
Female Snowboarder: Emerald Shirley, Norwell MA (1:04.58); and
Male Snowboarder: Jake Harris, Bedford NH (51.64).

The fastest female skiers were: ski_race04_pic2.jpg (91326 bytes)

Because this was a family oriented event, special trophies were awarded to the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son combinations.  The fastest times were:
Parent/Daughter: Samantha & Smed Grant, East Greenwich RI (42.84)
Parent/Son: Glen & Brian Schlager, Norwell MA (41.06)

Although the purpose of this fundraising event was to have a good time (which did indeed occur), the money raised by this fundraising ski_race04_pic5.jpg (63448 bytes) effort will go a long way in helping to support the initiatives of The Brendan Grant Foundation.  In particular, special thanks to the event sponsors, who were:
Barrett Plumbing & Heating, Falmouth MA
Corvel Corporation, Acton MA
Peak Action Photo, North Kingston RI
Plymouth Ski & Sport, Plymouth NH

webpicture_0025.jpg (77377 bytes) Tenney Mountain is located near Plymouth State College, and the ski area is easily accessible to the greater New England region.  It  provides a great venue for all who were able to attend and participate in the race, and for the other events held throughout the day.  Because of a revolutionary new technology implemented in 2003 called the ICM, or ice crunching machine, skiing, snowboarding and tubing continues throughout most of the year.  See the Tenney Mountain website for more information.  It has always been a favorite of the Grant Family, and Brendan often skied here.  This was the last place that Brendan had last enjoyed the winter sport of skiing.

Overall, this winter/spring family event was a wonderful success, with lots of fun had by all who were able to make it.  Next year, we hope to have a similar event, and we hope to see you there!
