3rd ANNUAL
BRENDAN GRANT WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Held Saturday, 3 January 2004 in Belmont, MA

The Third Annual Brendan Grant Wrestling Tournament was held at Belmont High School all day on Saturday 3 January 2004.  A warm and rainy winter day greeted all participants and supporters  for this particular tournament, and it was a great day to be indoors.  Once again the tournament was a success on all accounts.

This year the format was similar to that of previous year's, when eighteen high school teams participated in this extensive tournament.  These teams were from the following New England area high schools: Arlington MA, Belmont MA (host team), Catholic Memorial MA, East Providence RI, Hamilton-Wenham MA, Hingham MA, Leominster MA, Lexington MA, Malden MA, Marlboro MA, Melrose MA, Mission Hill MA, Nashua NH, Newton North MA, Savio Prep MA, Wakefield MA, Watertown MA and Wellesley MA.  All the team scores and winners brackets can be found on the Belmont Wrestling Website.

At the end of the day, the first place winners in each weight class were as follows: 103 - Andreozzi, East Providence; 112 - Finneran, Hingham; 119 - Lavoie, Nashua; 125 - Sanchez, Leominster; 130 - Johnson, Savio Prep; 135 - Araniz, Watertown; 140 - Lombardi, East Providence; 145 - Aufiero, Nashua; 152 - Welper, Nashua; 160 - Lashmit, Marlboro; 171 - Brooks, Hamilton-Wenham; 189 - Couitt, East Providence; 215 - Charest, East Providence;  and 275 - Spero, Arlington.

The number one team score at the tournament this year was a tie between Nashua NH and East Providence RI, which were the two teams that had to travel the farthest distance to the tournament.  The final overall team scores at the end of the tournament, in terms of total team points, were as follows: (1) East Providence - 178; (1) Nashua - 178; (3) Catholic Memorial - 141; (4) Arlington - 124; (5) Newton North - 109.5; (6) Leominster - 107; (7) Hingham - 106; (8) Wakefield - 94; (9) Hamilton-Wenham - 93; (10) Watertown - 68; (11) Melrose - 65; (12) Lexington - 63; (13) Wellesley - 61; (14) Malden - 59; (15) Savio Prep - 58.5; (16) Belmont - 51; (17) Marlboro - 28; (18) Mission Hill 7.

Previously referred to as the Belmont Invitational Wrestling Tournament, this event has for the last 23 years been one of the premier High School Wrestling gatherings of its kind in the Northeast region.   Brendan Grant was a devoted member of the Tournament's host wrestling squad during all four of his high school years, and during the 1999-2000 season he was one of the team captains that led the squad to one of their more successful seasons in years.  Click here for the story about the Brendan Grant Wrestling Tournament held in January 2003.

Overall, this year's 2004 invitational wrestling tournament was once again a great success.
