Tenney Mountain
3rd ANNUAL BRENDAN GRANT FOUNDATION SKI / SNOWBOARD RACE

Held Saturday, 12 March 2005 in Plymouth, NH

ski_race_pic4_05.jpg (13950 bytes)Saturday, 12 March 2005:  Skiers and snowboarders of all ages displayed their speed and agility skills at the Third Annual Brendan Grant Foundation Ski/Snowboard Race held at Tenney Mountain.  It was a snowy day in beautiful Plymouth, NH with over a foot of snow falling throughout the day.  But that didn't slow anybody down, and in fact 6 more racers attended than last year, and the race times were just as competitive despite the powdery blanket of fresh snow.

ski_race_pic3_05.jpg (44596 bytes)The fastest times of the day were recorded in the male skiers division.  Two runs were taken by each competitor, and the best of the two times was taken as the final placement time.  Carl Anderson Jr. of Hebron, NH was the racer to beat, and he had the fastest time of the day at 18.69 seconds.  Close behind him placing second and third overall was Dan Cui of Barrington, NH at 19.40 seconds and Smed Blair of East Greenwich, RI at 19.61 seconds, respectively.  The fastest female racer of the day was Rebeccah Anderson of Hebron, NH at 20.10 seconds.  Rebeccah is the younger sister of Carl, so the Anderson family really showed their talent on skis at this race.  Finishing just two one-hundredths of a second behind Rebeccah was Amanda Grant of Norwell, MA at 20.12 seconds, and third place overall for the fastest female racer was Jamie Blair of East Greenwich, RI at 20.28 seconds.

The times from the previous two years were posted, and skiers and snowboarders competed against each other and against themselves in an attempt to improve on their personal best time.  Awards were provided for the fastest male and female skiers in six age brackets, and for the fastest male and female snowboarders.  Awards were also presented to the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son pairs.  This was truly a family event in the spirit of the Foundation activities.  In addition, the racers were treated to a barbecue at the finish gate once they finished their run. ski_race_pic1_05.jpg (22704 bytes)

Several years of experience with this winter racing event has demonstrated that perhaps the most competitive and sought after prize is for the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son combinations.  This year, the trophies for the fastest family pairs were taken home as follows:
Parent/Daughter: Dan and Michaela Cui, Barrington NH (40.00)
Parent/Son: Glen & Eric Schlager, Norwell MA (41.74)

Although the purpose of this fundraising event was to have a good time (which did indeed occur), the money raised by this fundraising  effort will go a long way in helping to support the initiatives of The Brendan Grant Foundation.  In particular, special thanks go to the event sponsors, who generously helped support the event.  Please help ski_race_pic7_05.jpg (20747 bytes) support this year's sponsors, who are:

It was all smiles on the Giant Slalom race course, as well as at the award ceremony and raffle/silent-auction that followed.  A special "surprise" ceremony was also held at the end of the raffle to welcome home Tenney Mountain local Don Smialek, Jr. from a recent tour of duty in Iraq".  A large cake welcomed Don as he came up to receive what he thought was the last raffle prize.  And yes... Don was very surprised!ski_race_pic2_05.jpg (27353 bytes)

Tenney Mountain is located near Plymouth State College, and the ski area is easily accessible to the greater New England region.  It  provides a great venue for all who were able to attend and participate in the race, and for the other events held throughout the day.  See the Tenney Mountain website for more information.  It has always been a favorite of the Grant Family, and Brendan often skied here.  This was the last place that Brendan had last enjoyed the winter sport of skiing.

This year's event continued the tradition of being a wonderful winter/spring family success, with lots of fun had by all who attended.  The weather forecast admittedly provided a little scare about lots of snow, but in the end it proved to be no handicap whatsoever.  Next year we'll try it again, and we hope to see you then!
