9th ANNUAL
BRENDAN GRANT MEMORIAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Saturday, 9 January 2010 in Belmont, Massachusetts

The ninth Annual Brendan Grant Memorial Wrestling Tournament was held at Belmont High School all day on Saturday 9 January 2010. It was a cold but sunny day and a good day to be indoors for a high school wrestling tournament. Once again the efforts of numerous hard-working volunteers along with a field of strong competitors resulted in another successful and well-run tournament.

This tournament was first held in January 1982, and was renamed in 2002 as a tribute to Brendan Grant who was a member of the wrestling team for four years and a senior captain in the 1999-2000 seasons. Thus, while this is the 9th Annual tournament named after Brendan, overall it is the 29th Annual Belmont Wrestling Tournament.

The format for the event was similar to previous years, and included the following sixteen New England area high school teams: Arlington MA, Belmont MA (host team), Boston College High (Boston, MA), Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA), Concord/Carlisle MA, East Providence RI, Hingham MA, Josiah Quincy Upper School (Boston, MA), Lexington MA, Lincoln/Sudbury MA, Masconomet (Topsfield, MA), Needham MA, Newton North (Newton, MA), North Quincy (Quincy, MA), Wakefield MA, and Woburn MA.  The history of tournament results from 2003 to 2009 are available for download here.

At the end of the day, the first place team winner was the returning powerhouse squad from Needham with 198.5 team points. Second place went to new-comer Lincoln-Sudbury with 181.5 points, and placing third was Masconomet at 160.5 points.  The overall ranking of each team participating in the tournament since 2003 is available for download here. The remaining teams finishing 4th through 16th were: #4 Arlington (134.0); #5 Woburn (124.0); #6 Belmont (120.5); #6 Wakefield (120.5); #8 East Providence (119.0); #9 Catholic Memorial (109.5); #10 Concord-Carlisle (98.0); #11 Josiah Quincy (89.5); #12 Newton North (71.0); #13 Lexington (66.5); #14 Hingham (53.5); #15 North Quincy (48.0); #16 BC High (16.0). The overall ranking of each team participating in the tournament since 2003 is available for download here. A summary of the top six 2010 wrestlers in each weight class is available for download here.

The host Belmont squad had 12 wrestlers competing in the 14 weight classes. Two Belmont wrestlers, Tim Hatch at 171 lbs. and Joe Canina at 189 lbs., both finished top in their weight class. This was the second year in a row that Belmont had a strong team showing, with a 120.5 team points that almost matched last year’s 130 team points. This year Belmont finished 6th out of the 16th teams in attendance. The details of the Belmont wrestlers finishing in the top six slots were: 112 lb slot Sami Baghdady placed 2nd; 130 lb Oscar Derderian placed 5th; 140 lb Mark Torosian placed 4th; 171 lb Tim Hatch placed 1st; 189 lb Joe Canina placed 1st; and 275 lb Brian Conneely placed 3rd.

Brendan was a devoted member of the Tournament's host wrestling squad during all four of his high school years, and during the 1999-2000 season he was one of the team captains that led the squad to one of their more successful seasons in years.

Overall, this year's January 2010 invitational wrestling tournament was once again a great success.
