11th ANNUAL
BRENDAN GRANT MEMORIAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Saturday, 7 January 2012 in Belmont, Massachusetts
It
was a great day for high school wrestling for the eleventh Annual
Brendan Grant Memorial Wrestling Tournament. As in previous years the
full-day tourney was held at Belmont High School on the first Saturday
in January, which for 2012 was on the 7th. The dedicated efforts of
numerous hardworking volunteers and a strong field of athletes provided
yet another successful and well-run tournament.
This particular high school wrestling tournament was first held in
January 1982, and was renamed in 2002 as a tribute to Brendan Grant who
was a member of the wrestling team for four years and a senior captain
in the 1999-2000 seasons. Thus, while this is the 11th Annual tournament
named after Brendan, overall it is the 31th Annual Belmont Wrestling
Tournament.

The format for the event was similar to previous years, and included the
following sixteen New England area high school teams: Arlington MA,
Belmont MA (host team), Boston College High (Boston, MA), Brookline,
Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA), Concord/Carlisle MA, Durfee (Fall
River, MA), East Providence RI, Josiah Quincy Upper School (Boston, MA),
Lexington MA, Masconomet (Topsfield, MA), Needham MA, Newton North
(Newton, MA), North Quincy (Quincy, MA), Wakefield MA, and Woburn MA.
At the end of the day, the first place team winner was the returning
powerhouse squad from Needham, which ended the tournament with the top
team score for the third year in row. The final team standings were:
#1 Needham (198.0)
#2 Masconomet (156.0)
#3 East Providence (149.0)
#4 Catholic Memorial (138.5)
#5 Woburn (130.5)
#6 Durfee (121.5)
#7 Wakefield (115.0)
#8 Arlington (101.0)
#9 Josiah Quincy Upper School (99.5)
#10 Belmont (95.0)
#11 Concord-Carlisle (91.0)
#12 Brookline (85.5)
#13 Lexington (83.5)
#14 Newton North (77.0)
#15 Boston College High (11 .0)
#16 North Quincy (0.0)
A
summary of the top six placing wrestlers in each weight class from the
2012 tournament is now available, as well as a
summary of the team scores since 2003. The overall ranking of each team
participating in the tournament since 2003 is also available
sorted by (1) rank and
(2)
sorted alphabetically. The 2011 Outstanding Wrestler, as voted by all 16
coaches at the conclusion of tournament, was Sami Baghdady, the 132 lb
wrestler from Belmont.
It was an unseasonably warm fair-weather day for this year’s Tournament.
This event is hosted annually by the Friends of Belmont Wrestling in
conjunction with Belmont High School, and it is their single fundamental
fundraising event.

In January 2002 the tournament was renamed in honor of Brendan Grant,
BHS class of 2000, and who passed away tragically in June of 2001.
Brendan was a devoted member of the Tournament's host wrestling squad
during all four of his high school years, and during the 1999-2000
season he was one of the team captains that led the squad to one of
their more successful seasons during those years.
This year's January 2012 invitational wrestling tournament was once
again a wonderful success. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for the
first Saturday in January, and we hope you can join us!
